Blood Relations

It is a very important part of verbal reasoning. In most of the competitive exams questions based on blood relations are asked and hence becomes one of the most weighted topic. The questions on blood relation are based on the  different relations among the members of a family. Some information is given in the question and based on the information, you are 0required to identify the relations between particular members of the family.

Blood Relations Basics: 

Any relation in the world which either by birth or by marriage is called Blood Relations

Scoring marks in this area depends on the fact that how well versed are you in the various types of relations that exist in a family.  The success of a candidate depends upon his/her knowledge of blood relations. Some of which are summarised below to help solve these tests.

Mothers or fathers son Brother
Mothers or fathers daughter Sister
Mothers or fathers brother Uncle
Mothers or fathers sister Aunt
Mothers or fathers father Grandfather
Mothers or fathers mother Grandmother
Sons wife Daughter-in-law

Remark: A relation on the mothers side is called maternal while that on the fathers side is called paternal. Thus, mothers brother is maternal uncle while fathers brothers paternal uncle.

Symbols and their meaning : -

  • -  Represents couple (husband and wife, also known as spouse)
  • leftrightarrow  Represents siblings (brothers & sister l Sister & Sister l Brother & Brother)
  • mid     Represents level of generation.
  • square  Represents male member.
  • bigcirc  Represents female member.
  • No symbol represents that the gender is not mentioned
  • Illustration : Identify the relation from the figure.

    Solution: It means that A is wife of B. C and D are brothers and children of A and B.

    Illustration: A is B's sister. C is B's mother. D is C's father. E is D's mother B is grandson of D. Then, how is A related to D?

    A. Grandfather      B. Grandmother       C. Daughter    D. Granddaughter

    Answer:  D

    Solution: A is the sister of B and B is the daughter of C.

    So, A is the daughter of C. Also, D is the father of C.

    So, A is the granddaughter of D.

    Illustration: P and Q are sisters. P is the mother of R. Q's daughter S is married with T. X is the husband of P. How is Q related to T?

    A. Mother                B. Sister-in-law             C. Mother-in-law                D. None of these.

    Answer: C

    Solution: S is the daughter of Q and T is the husband of S.

    So, Q is the mother-in-law of T because of given that P and Q are sisters means Q is female.

    So Q is Mother - in - law to T
